Liquid Trade Waste

Liquid Trade Waste Pricing and Management

Sewerage systems are primarily designed to transport and treat domestic strength sewerage using mostly biological systems for treatment.  Trade Waste is liquid waste that is put into the sewerage system by agreement with Cradle Mountain Water in excess of domestic strength or household waste. Cradle Mountain Water is required to manage the acceptance of liquid trade waste to ensure that the sewerage received from all sources can be safely transported and treated to a standard that prevents environmental and operational harm.
Trade Waste charges can apply to apply to shops such as hairdressers and fish and chip shops through to large commercial and industrial customers.  There are four categories of tradewaste customers.  These are fully described in the Liquid Trade Waste Pricing and Management Policy.
All customers putting stronger than domestic strength waste into the sewerage system are required to have obtained a Trade Waste Agreement (TWA), consent or license to discharge their trade waste into our sewerage system.
Customers who have a current contract have already had their rates increases as per individual contracts.
New trade waste customers will be charged as per the attached schedule of Trade Waste charges.
Trade Waste charges will be regulated by the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator from July 2012.

National Wastewater Source Management Guidelines

The National Wasterwater Source Management Guidelines July 2008 set the rules which prevent wastewater systems in our cities and towns becoming subject to inappropriate charges.  They cover discharges from both industrial and commercial premises, and also from household sources. Input from household sources can also be of significance if there are a sufficient number of customers.

As a member of the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA), Cradle Mountain Water uses these guidelines as its benchmark in terms of the provision to our wastewater source management customers.

A copy of the guidelines are available for reference.
