Smithton Sewer Main Update - Lee Street
Cradle Mountain Water would like to advise Smithton residents that construction work on the collapsed Lee Street sewer main is progressing steadily.
"Investigations conducted after the initial collapse, indicated that the extent of the damage to the sewer main was significantly greater than anticipated," CEO Andrew Kneebone said.
"As a result, this project became an unbudgeted capital project, requiring detailed preparatory work and tendering before construction work could begin. These works included a detailed assessment of the capacity of the main and subsequently we decided to upgrade the capacity of this portion of the main significantly as security against similar problems in the future," he said.
"We appreciate that some residents have become frustrated due to the delays with this repair. However, given the nature of the works to be undertaken, and the fact that it is such a critical part of infrastructure, it was essential that Cradle Mountain Water had all the appropriate safety requirements and planning in place before we commenced work," he said.
"All services have now been located, and construction work has commenced. The water main in Gibson Street has been relocated and construction of the sewer started earlier this week. To date, approximately 60m, of the 250m of sewer main, has been constructed."
"Cradle Mountain Water is conscious of the impacts these works are having on residents, especially over the Christmas period and we are committed to doing our utmost to reduce the impacts of odour and noise throughout this period," he said.
'Again, we would like to thank residents and property owners for their patience and understanding. We will continue to provide the community with regular updates on the project's progress," he said.
